Who We Are

About CHADET

CHADET is an indigenous non-governmental organization that works to improve the lives of marginalized children in Ethiopia by providing access to quality education and improving livelihood opportunities. CHADET was established in 1995 by managing director Anannia Admassu with a strong believe and will-power to bring about lasting change in the lives of children that otherwise would have few opportunities. Investing in childhood, CHADET gives children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and to thrive for a better future.

The first project was launched in 1997 in Addis Ketema, Merkato; one of the most congested parts of the city of Addis Ababa where tens of thousands of street and disadvantaged children live. In subsequent years the organization expanded its intervention areas in many other regions throughout Ethiopia. With over twenty years of experience, CHADET has established itself as a well-respected, authoritative organization among the communities it’s working with, its partners and donor organizations as well as the government.

Mission

CHADET aims to create access to basic services to the most vulnerable children in both the rural and urban areas of Ethiopia. To achieve this goal, CHADET is active in four areas: education, child safe guarding, improvement of livelihood and research.

Key objectives

1. Provision and facilitation of quality services in four areas:
•  Promoting/expanding quality primary, secondary and TVET level educational suppor
•  Promoting/expanding quality health services for vulnerable children and guardians;
•  Economic strengthening through livelihood support;
•  Child safeguarding
2. Capacity building of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and local partners and strengthening the network of referral links between children and partners.
3. Promote broader participation of children and communities to ensure child safeguarding and protection.
4. Research, Networking and Public Education: to enhance public awareness and change perceptions about child safeguarding issues through close collaboration
with governmental and non-governmental institutions that work on the prevention of child abuse and exploitation.

 Project areas

In all our projects we closely collaborate with our local partners who play a pro-active role in supporting the children in their communities. Enhancing the capacity and strengthening networks of the implementing organizations is at the core of each project.

Education
Educational projects are designed to promote children’s education through providing access to Early Childhood Care and Education, followed by primary and lower secondary education. Besides financial support, these include the provision of scholastic materials and tutorial support. Projects like the Girls Education Challenge are directed at girls specifically, because their education is generally valued the least important.

Safe guarding
The child safe guarding programmes aim to prevent risky child migration on the main migration routes in Ethiopia and offer support to intercepted children and their family. Furthermore, it promotes the inclusion of children with special needs and gender equity within all of its programmes.

Economic strengthening
The third area of focus is the economic strengthening of households through livelihood support. To change the lives of impoverished children, CHADET believes it is essential to maintain a holistic approach. That’s why not only children are being trained in various marketable skills, business training and TVET education; also the parents or guardians receive support in income generating activities through the participation in Self Help Groups and Saving Cooperation’s for example.

Research, networking and public education
To share best practices and to provide quality services, CHADET collaborates closely with governmental and non-governmental institutions that work on the prevention of child abuse and exploitation. Moreover, in order to raise community’s awareness on the risk that street and working children face, CHADET organized public education programs and disseminates information through music, drama, leaflets, posters radio and television.
